A hotel-management topper, Runeet Gulati had turned into  a kidnapper and killed his friend in panic. He along with his friend couple, college dropouts had kidnapped their friend from Delhi for ransom but the kidnap had gone awry and ended the life of Shivam, the victim.

Shivam Kapoor, a son of a wealthy businessman who had recently completed a large land deal, was planned and abducted by Runeet, Abhey Diwan and Mahima, and their friend Jatin. Abhey and Runeet were friends.

Abhey had accepted to play a part in the plan as they had lost 75 lakhs in betting in IPL. The police said that they didn't plan on killing the victim initially but they had actually done so in panic as Shivam raised panic soon after he suspected foul play.

On July 18th, Runeet called Shivam, who was with another friend, saying that he needed to discuss something urgent at 11pm. He soon figured things were not right and started screaming. Abhey had to shoot him in the abdomen and injected sedatives. In panic they also cut the veins of Shivam killing him. Later Jatin had shot him in the head to ensure he was dead, burnt the body so his identity would  not be revealed.

A 11 year old who saw the people in a Maruti Suzuki Swift dumping a body in the canal at Ekta Camp Pitampura had tipped the police of the incident who later zeroed in on the victim by matching the missing persons details. They had received the complaint of a body at the canal near Pitampura on July 19th and began the investigations.

A bottle of petrol was purchased by the accused at Pitampura Police station.
