At least 22 people were killed in an accident after a bus had slipped and rolled into a gorge in East Jaintia Hills district, early on Wednesday. 6 people were critically injured.

The bus was travelling to Agartala while coming from Guwahati but had fallen into a deep valley at Tamseng Village, Superintendent of Police M K Dkhar said. He added that rescue operations had already begin.

The accident took place between 3 am and 5 am in the Tamseng village which lies near the Meghalaya Assam Border.

22 dead bodies were retrieved from the 80-feet deep fall into the valley and at least six people critically injured and immediately transferred to the Khliehriat community health centre.

There could be more deaths that would be uncovered after the rescue operations being conducted by the district police and fire service personnel are on the job.
