India had earlier been promised a land worth Rs 100 cr in the highly esteemed Galle road, which is in the center of Colombo and it is owned by a private agency. However, this land which was promised to India was also allotted to the major Asian country and contender, China. An aviation company from the Asian giant had been allotted the land and this had been the cause of concern for the nation as China has ties with Pakistan. India has hence decided to pursue the matter further while talking to Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry. China's increasing influence in Sri Lanka is also equally worrisome.
Earlier Indian High Commission had finalized the necessary talks with the foreign ministry in Sri Lanka, a mandatory step to make such purchases, for the establishment of a cultural center. The authorities on our country were shocked to see that the plot has been allotted to China National Aero technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC), a manufacturer of aircraft in China.
The Indian high commission is waiting for the official report about the sale from Sri Lankan counterparts. CATIC though concentrates on defense contracts with aviation, they plan to establish a 5 star hotel. The very same company has helped Pakistan develop the JF-17 which is a counter to India's Tejas.
Though seemingly harmless the Chinese acquisition of the land could be disastrous in actuality with China expanding its base in Sri Lanka. President Mahinda Rajapaksa had insisted that Sri Lanka would remain a non-aligned nation but accepted that there were more number of investments from China in the recent years. China also had helped the country fight the terrorist outfit in the nation, he said. "When we had to fight the most brutal terrorist outfit in the world, we had to buy arms and ammunition from legal entities that were ready to sell them to us at the best terms," Sri Lankan President said.
