Rebels in Syria had gone so far as to shoot down a helicopter of the military while it was flying over Damascus on Monday after riots and protests against the government's forces, the Free Syrian Army told the media.
The incident was recorded after gore and intense government operation in and around the capital killing several hundred in the past few days. On Saturday, it is feared that there were over 320 deaths recorded as most were shot in the head, in Darayya suburbs alone. This was considered by the opposition groups as the biggest massacre of the conflict yet.
In what appears to resemble a dramatic scene from action movies, a footage shows a helicopter coughing smoke, tail on fire, and plummeting towards the ground in the Qaboun area of northeastern Damascus. The video went viral after it was posted in the internet. The sound of a heavy machine gun firing can also be heard in the video.
There is no information whether there are survivors of the crew in the crash or if they were taken as refugees, Col. Aref Hammoud, a spokesman for the Free Syrian Army said.
The government news agency, which supports the President Bashar al-Assad said that the helicopter crash could be the misdeed of the Israelis.
"This is not our first encounter with the Israelis inside of Syria, but it’s the first step towards their end. Our trust in the army has no limits," the post from the news agency said.
