100-year-old's driving accident

11 people were hit by a 100year-old driving his car and accidentally instead of backing it up on the road he reversed it on to the sidewalk. The incident happened on Wednesday in south Los Angeles near an elementary school.

4 of the children were in critical condition and they were immediately taken to a hospital for treatment. Their situation had stabilized at he hospital, according to the authorities.

Driving a powder blue Cadillac, Preston Carter, backed slowly into the group of parents and children who were making purchases from a vendor on a sidewalk. Before the old man could respond to the banging on the windows and come to a halt a few children were already injured and trapped under the car.

Carter who was very cooperative with the police investigations also talked to television reporters after the crash some five miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles.
"My brakes failed. It was out of control," Carter told KCAL-TV, who would be turning 101 on September 5th this year.

He felt extremely sorry for the children he hit and that he wouldn't never do such a thing, expressing his sympathies for them.
Police Captain Rodriguez said that it could have been a miscalculation on his part which is not uncommon for a person his age.

California's Department of Motor Vehicles requires that anyone over 70 years of age should renew their driving license in person and not on the Internet or Mail. They would also have to take a supplemental driving test if they fail a vision exam or if a police officer, a physician, or a family member raises questions about their ability to drive.

Carter, who had a valid driver's license, was not arrested and the case was registered as an accident.
Rodriguez said the collision was being investigated as an accident, and Carter was not under arrest. He has a valid driver's license, Rodriguez said.
