Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh has agreed to reduce the levels of water of the Omkareshwar Dam to 189 meters sources said. The decision followed the severe protests from the farmers in neck-deep water after 17 agonizing days seeking for compensation and new homes. The CM has agreed to look into all their demands within five days after he had agreed to constitute a committee of five members.
Shivra Chouhan has nodded to the the demand of land for land according to the GRA order which has asked for the rehabitation of the protestors who had lost their homes.
The villages did not seem very content with the promises of Chouhan and called it a partial victory. They also said that they would not end their protests until the water level receded.
Since 17 days the villagers who resided by the Omkareshwar Dam were displaced from their homes and had resorted to a never-before form of protest by standing in neck deep water while seeking new homes and compensation for the losses incurred. A central fact-finding team will reach Khandwa on Monday to meet the protestors.
