US Consulate in Berlin evacuated

The US Embassy had mentioned that the consulate in Berlin had been evacuated on precautionary measures after an employee complained of a strange odor emanating from an envelope.

According to the spokeswoman Ruth Bennett, an employee had complained that there was a strange smell in an envelope submitted by an applicant for visa which supposedly contained the supporting documents. It was also mentioned that the envelope was handed over in person on Thursday morning.

There were no reported injuries and the application is being examined by the American and German authorities. Bennett also mentioned that the status of the person who had brought in the application was not known.

The U.S. Embassy is located in downtown but the consulate is in the southern Zehlendorf area
