Rehman Malik the interior minister of Pakistan was in India for three days with the motive of having a joint statement but on the last day he was rejected as a mark of public protest against his attitude and statements that were spoken out of turn. India has refused to make any joint statement along with him, defeating the primary purpose of his visit to India.
A joint press conference between the Indian home minister and the Pakistani version of the same was ruled out due to an ongoing parliament session after which the parties both agreed on a joint statement.
However, Rehman Malik's behavior over the course of the next few days has irked the ministers and the nation as a whole. Speaking of Babri Masjid incident and 26/11 disaster on the same breath was not tolerable. He also said that Saurabh Kalia, the Kargil martyr could have breathed his last due to extreme weather conditions which was the last straw in the hat.
It was then evident that he was not very sincere with the promise to punish the perpetrators of 26/11. The decision to curb issuing any joint statement came in the last minute. Home ministry officials were asked to work on Sunday indicating that the ministry was hopeful of a positive response initially.
The Pak minister's attitude has now taken the peace proceedings in the opposite direction now widening the rift between the countries. In fact, Shinde was so troubled by the mention of Babri Masjid that he told his Pak counterpart that he should have been wise enough to speak only about visa agreements.
