Students from across Delhi gathered in large numbers demanding justice to the the rape-in-moving-bus victim. The protest was organized at the India gate overseeing the Rashtrapathi Bhavan since morning (December 22). The 23-years-old medical student a victim to the gruesome rape,is right now battling for life at Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital.
The students in hundreds started to walk towards the Rashtrapathi Bhavan to cordon off the area and highlight their demands. Police tried to prevent them by placing barricades. The agitating students broke across them and tried to get through the police forces when the security forces resorted to firing water canons.
However this had very little effect on the unrelenting students and they were willing for any sacrifice to achieve their objective. Police then started lobbing tear gas shells and lathi-charged the students. Earlier it was noted that some students attacked police person on duty and damaged some vehicles.
The entire place has been cordoned off by the arrival of the Rapid action force and tension is high. The government has been requesting the student force to stay calm, turning violent only spoils the interest of the protest, setting a bad precedent. Many have been arrested by the police.
Six of the accused have been arrested, as the victim is slowly recovering, nevertheless the trauma is to haunt her for sometime in future. (Wishesh AarKay)
