PM, as father of 3 daughters, understands protests

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urged the people to remain calm after the protests turned violent on Sunday while they were enraged with the Delhi gang rape case in the city. A 23 year old girl was brutally raped and thrown out of the moving bus in which she suffered fatal injuries. The girl's condition has deteriorated in the past few hours and remains to be critical.

Addressing the people of the country on Monday, he urged the concerned public to maintain calm and peace. The address on television directed at all the people protesting requested them to keep calm while assuring them that "all possible efforts" would be taken to ensure security and safety of women in the country.

"I appeal to all concerned citizens to maintain peace and calm," he said. He told the people that the government will keep the country informed on all the developments in the case.

He added that he, as a father of three daughters himself, knows the pain of the people and feels for the incident as any other while agreeing with the people over the rape. However he said that the citizens of the nation should maintain peace and calm after assuring that they would “ensure justice” to the nation.

"While anger against the incident is justified, violence will serve no purpose."
