Supreme stays execution of Nirbhaya convicts

The Supreme Court on Monday issued a stay on the death sentence of two convicts in connection with the Delhi Gangrape case. A trial court held Mukesh, Pawan, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Thakur guilty on September 10, 2013 and they were awarded the death sentence after being charged with murder, attempt to murder, gangrape, kidnapping and unnatural acts. The Delhi High court had upheld the death sentence awarded to the four convicts on March 13. Convicts  Akshay and Vinay approached the apex court challanging Delhi High Court order giving death penalty. A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court said it will hear arguments of both sides and decide whether it is a rarest of rare case and dealth penalty should be awarded to the convicts.
