Delhi Gang Rape Victim's death won't be in vain

On the death of the rape victim in Singapore's Mount Elizabeth hospital after she succumbed to lung infection and cerebral edema, the whole nation was devastated and mourned for her.

The Prime Minister urged the people of the nation to ensure that her death was not in vain. "I want to tell them (her parents) and the nation that while she may have lost her battle for life, it is up to us all to ensure that her death will not have been in vain."

Delhi CM Sheila Dixit also said that the death was a shame to the nation apart from being a great tragedy. She asked the people to remain calm and maintain peace. Condoling her parents and family she added, “My thoughts are with the girl's family.”

Indian high commissioner said that the body of the victim who passed away would be brought back to India on a chartered flight.

Delhi Police today announced that the India gate and the surrounding areas in the national capital, the power center, would be restricted to public access. Large scale protests were feared in the area after the victim passed away.

10 Major metros were also closed for the day. Pragati Maidan, Mandi House, Barakhamba Road, Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Udyog Bhawan, Race Course, Jor Bagh and Khan Market are closed down in Delhi today.
