Govt to cancel Georgia University SEZ

Govt to cancel Georgia University SEZ The Kirankumar reddy government may cancel the education SEZ allotted to the US-based Georgia Tech University as the proposed project has not come up even after four years of the allotment of land.

State government allotted 20 acres in Hyderabad and 70 acres in Visakhapatnam to the University in 2007 through an MOU for setting up its campuses in AP.

The University, instead of launching the campuses in the allotted land, said after one year it wanted to start an education SEZ in Hyderabad and sought 250 acres. The government again allotted 250 acres in Rangareddy district in 2008 but then nothing was heard of on the issue from the University after that.

When the state government wanted to know the fate of the project, the University replied that it was delayed due to global recession. It also informed the government that the Satyam Computers had agreed to partner with it in the project. However, things came back to square one after the Satyam scam broke out in 2009. The government then came to know that the project has been shelved.

After a final reminder, a delegation from the university met the then CM, Mr.K. Rosaiah and the then higher education minister, Sridhar Babu and informed them that they had not shelved the project.

They said that they would soon launch operations temporarily from Microsoft in Hyderabad but nothing has happened till now forcing the government to have a final review of the project and take a decision on the cancellation of SEZ.
