A group of more than 70 students of the now infamous University of Northern Virginia, most of them from Andhra Pradesh, today met the senior officials of the Indian embassy in Washington and urged them to take steps to ensure their continuation of studies in the US.
The students requested the authorities to use their good offices with the US government to ensure that the years they had spent at the University would not go down the drain.
“We have incurred lot of money and energy besides spending years of study at the University and that should not go into waste,” they pleaded with the Indian Embassy officials.
The officials told the students that the investigation was not aimed at the students and the university was not being closed completely. “There is no threat to your visa status also and you can transfer to other universities,” officials told the worried students. They promised to take up the issue with the US authorities.
It might be mentioned that the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials had served a notice on the University for withdrawing the license to admit foreign students for violating the immigration laws and admitting students beyond the permitted intake.
Out of the 2400 students studying in the University, 90 per cent of them are from India and again 70 per cent of them are from AP.
