Heavy rains over the last three days brought life to a standstill in both Chittor and Potti Sriramulu Nellore districts with all rivers, streams and rivulets overflowing.

Flood water has submerged crops in thousands of acres and entered several houses in more than dozen villages in the districts. Most of the lakes have developed breaches increasing the flood threat. Kalangi Reservoir in the Chittor district is also facing the flood threat.

The rains, which have been lashing the two districts following a depression in the Arabian Sea, are causing concern as major rivers Kaivalya and Swarnma Mukhi are overflowing.

While several villages have lost contact with the outside world, transport system also came to a grinding halt at several places in the two districts as roads developed cracks and breaches. Several Chennai bound trains have been stopped between Nellore and Gudur due to submersion of railway track.

According to reports, groundnut crop in more than 1000 hectares has been damaged and paddy seedlings and crops in thousands of acres were submerged in Nellore district. Meanwhile, weatherman has forecast continuous rains till Monday night under the influence of the depression in the Arabian Sea. (JUBS)
