Women in a village stage week-long dharnas against liquor shops

A group of women in Peddapasupula Village of Kadapa district have been staging dharna for the past five days demanding the government for cancelling the licenses of liquor shops in the village. Women, on the first day, launched protest in front of a liquor shop for hours together that had eventually made the vendor roll down the shutters.

After visiting the district collector ten days ago urging him to close down the wine shops in the village stating that several men in the village are addicting to the liquor and abandoning their families besides hurting their pockets.

The women have also complained that the liquor vendors were offering liquor everyday even when men don’t have money in their pockets on the condition that they repay the amount with hefty interests in near future.

They have also said that the vendors even forced them to mortgage their lands when the villagers failed to clear the dues with heavy interests timely.

The women in Kadapa district have been staging dharnas demanding the government to roll down the shutters of wine shops in Peddapasupula village that come under Jammalamadugu constituency.

They even expressed their anguish against the government and have said that the officials are being empathetic. Later they took out a protest in novelty by seeking alms for the chief minister. (Phani)
