Illegal assets case: ED enters the picture

After CBI, it's Enforcement Directorate, which is likely to grill Kadapa MP Jaganmohan Reddy for allegedly holding illegal assets. The sources have said that the ED has already prepared a list of assets of YSR Congress party chief. The list, as of now, has apparently crossed eight crore rupees figure and ED is presumably going to add up further based on the findings of the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Once ED prepares the list it will attach the same under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, said sources. It is known that two officials from Enforcement Directorate landed in Hyderabad from Delhi on Tuesday and they are likely to record the statements of Jaganmohan Reddy.

The sources have also indicated that the Enforcement Directorate sleuths are presumably going to question Jaganmohan Reddy in jail itself. It is known that Jaganmohan Reddy is now in Chanchalguda Jail under judicial custody till June 11. CBI Court in Nampally has remanded Jagan to the custody in connection with illegal assets case. Notably, he is the prime accused, according to the Central Bureau of Investigation, which is probing the disproportionate assets case.

While the CBI is solely looking into the complete illegal assets case, the Enforcement Directorate will only look into the alleged foreign investments by the companies run by Jaganmohan Reddy.

When did Jagan come into political picture?

The son of late chief minister YS Rajashekara Reddy came into the picture much before the death of his father. Jagan was elected as Kadapa MP from Congress party. However, he began to occupy prominent space in newspaper only after YSR was killed in a chopper crash.

Jaganmohan Reddy wanted to become the chief minister and the Congress high command chose Rosaiah as the chief minister due to the sudden death of YSR. Many MLAs expressed their dissatisfaction but gelled up with the rest soon while only a few legislators had stuck to Jagan. The number became clear when the TDP moved no confidence motion against the government.

While Jagan already resigned from Congress and has set up his YSR Congress party, YS Vijayamma resigned for MLA post as well as Congress post. While Vijayamma won as MLA from YSR Congress this time, Jagan became Kadapa MP from YSR Congress during last year by-polls. It was during that by-election Jagan gave details of his assets and he became the richest parliamentarian in the country.

When TDP moved no confidence motion last year, a few members of Congress party voted against the government and were disqualified. There were totally 17 MLAs who supported Jagan and got disqualified from the house. And the present by-polls are due to the disqualification.

Now that Jaganmohan Reddy is behind the bars, many people across the state and even eminent journalists have said that it could touch the sentimental chords of the people and favour YSR Congress but in Hyderabad people were reportedly stating that Jagan going to jail at this point of time would cost the party dearly.   (Phani)
