Rail bridge to Rameswaram damaged

Due to heavy winds in the Pamban (Tamil Nadu) Coast, a ship rammed into the Pamban Railway Bridge disrupting the morning train traffic to Rameswaram. The south tip of the nation faced disconnected on the rail route as a ship that was bound for Karwar in Karnataka rammed into the barge.

The ship was grounded due to a technical snag and was being towed from Kolkata. Unfortunately as it was going through the Pamban channel when heavy winds altered the course of the ship and equally swayed the barge which swings mechanically to allow ships. The accident damaged the rail tracks on the barge to reach the Rameswaram town.

Railway authorities confirmed the damage and signaled the delay of trains from Chennai to the Mandapam station about 15 kms from the barge. They also expressed that the British era train track would take time to be restored. This is one of the rare incidents since the barge had been constructed expressed locals. (Wishesh AarKay)
