Rajya Sabha MP Rashid Masood is disqualified from Rajya Sabha today for he was recently convicted and was awarded a jail sentence for four years.
He is the first Member of Parliament to get disqualified after the Supreme Court’s rule on 10th July to disqualify the Members of the Parliament and the State Assemblies if they get convicted and sentenced for more than two years of imprisonment.
Masood was charged by the CBI for nominating undeserving candidates to MBBS seats allotted to Tripura as the Minister of Health.
The disqualification is applicable to the MPs and MLAs even if they file an appeal in the higher courts.
RJD Chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and JD(U) leader Jagdish Sharma MPs of Lok Sabha are also convicted and sentenced for 6 and 4 years of imprisonment respectively. They are also recommended by the Attorney General to disqualify them immediately and to issue notification of their positions vacant by the Lok Sabha and warned that any delay in it amounts to non-compliance of the Supreme Court’s order.
