Recognize Transgenders as third gender: Supreme

The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the government to consider Transgenders as third gender and issue them voter ID, Passport and driving license. Making a historical landmark decision, Supreme asked the Union government to treat transgenders as socially and economically backward and get them access to reservation in jobs and education.

The apex court also asked the state and central government to organize public awareness campaigns for the third gender, medical facilities and also to construct special public toilets for them. Supreme also opined that absence of Law recognizing them could not continue.

The National Legal Services Authority has welcomed the Supreme Court decision which filed a petition seeking equal rights for this group of people.
