Despite getting nod from the Parliament, Polavaram continues to remain on a sticky wicket. A day after the approval, Odisha legislators staged a protest in Koraput district against the Polavaram multi-purpose project. Ironically the ruling Biju Janata Dal MLAs disrupted the Assembly proceedings on Monday and accused BJP, Congress parties for voting in favour of Polavaram Bill. The MLAs marched down to Raj Bhavan and submitted a memorandum to Governor S. C. Jamir urging to intervene in this issue.
The BJD fears that a large number of tribal people in Malkangiri district will be affected by the construction of the Polavaram project and would lead to submergence of villages in Malkangiri. So far Odisha has filed four case against the Polavaram dam in Supreme Court which are in pending and further they are looking at other legal options to tackle the Polavaram construction.
Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik is expected to meet President Pranab Mukherjee also in this regards and he is expected to take, environmental activists along with him to convey the amount of threat with Polavaram.
