Around 19 people, visited All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), General Secretary Sasikala Natarajan in Bengaluru’s Parpanna Agrahara prison, reveals a Right to Information (RTI) query.
The apex court, on February 14, has convicted Sasikala, guilty of abatement in the Disproportionate Assets (DA) case, and imposed a four-year imprisonment.
According to the rules for common convicts, a prisoner can meet his or her relatives, once in 15 days. However, Sasikala had visitors with 19 people meeting her in a month.
Moreover, the visitors, stayed beyond the stipulated time, said reports. The RTI query further revealed that, many met Sasikala after 6 pm, while no visitor is allowed to meet after 5 pm.
The two convicts, Sasikala, and her sister-in-law, Ilavarasi, have seen a flurry of visits by advocates from Chennai, MPs, her husband and MLAs, from February 16, 2017 till March 18, 2017, reports say.
They were even visited by senior office bearers such as MP Thambiduari, Dinakaran and several MLAs such Valaramathy, Gokula Indira, CR Saraswathi and several representatives from Mannargudi in Tamil Nadu.
The Supreme Court, had in its judgement, convicting Sasikala that, the AIADMK chief, would be treated as ordinary inmate, out any special cell or facilities. Subsequently, the AIADMK Chief’s requests such as mattresses, a table fan, attached bathroom and special meals were rejected by jail authorities.
But now, the rules seem to have been openly disregarded. The convict Sasikala, and her team were being treated as VVIP convicts rather than ordinary ones, says sources.
Senior AIADMK leaders - including Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker Thambidurai and Sasikala’s nephew, TTV Dinakaran, also met Sasikala, before the AIADMK, approached the Election Commission seeking rights to the “Two Leaves symbol”, the RTI response said.
TTV Dinakaran, who leads the AIADMK (Amma) faction, is also said to be seeking Sasikala’s transfer to a jail in Tamil Nadu.
