Telangana Health Department issues heatwave advisory:- The State health department is advising the general public to exercise utmost caution and take necessary measures to protect themselves from the ongoing heatwave in Hyderabad and other districts. To ensure preparedness, extensive arrangements have been made, including the provision of special beds, I.V fluids, essential medications at public health facilities, and availability of ORS sachets with ANMs / ASHAs / Anganwadi workers to address any emergencies, according to Dr B Ravinder Nayak, Director of Public Health (DPH). It is crucial for vulnerable individuals such as infants, young children, pregnant women, people working outdoors, and those with mental or physical health conditions, particularly heart disease or high blood pressure, to exercise extreme caution.
Actions to be taken:
- Stay hydrated: Drink an adequate amount of water regularly, even if not feeling thirsty.
- Consume Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), lemon water, butter milk / lassi with added salts, fruit juices, etc.
- Carry water while traveling.
- Include seasonal fruits and vegetables with high water content, such as watermelon, muskmelon, orange, grapes, pineapple, cucumber, lettuce, or other locally available options, in your diet.
- Dress appropriately: Wear loose, lightweight cotton clothing in light colors.
- Protect your head: Use an umbrella, hat, cap, towel, or traditional headgear when exposed to direct sunlight.
- Wear shoes or sandals when going out in the sun.
During the daytime, it is advisable to keep your curtains closed, particularly on the sunny side of your house. However, you should open them at night to allow cooler air to enter. When venturing outside, it is best to limit your outdoor activities to the cooler parts of the day, such as the morning and evening. It is advised to avoid being in direct sunlight between 12 noon and 3 pm, as well as engaging in strenuous activities during the afternoon. Additionally, it is advisable not to go outside barefoot and to avoid cooking during the hottest hours of the summer.
