A mob of around 400 women poured kerosene on a youth and burnt him alive on Tuesday afternoon for trying to rape and kill an 18-year-old girl in Raghunathpally village of Zafargad mandal.
According to sources, G. Babu, 30, a resident of Perumallagudem of Wardhanapet mandal, had visited adjoining Raghunathpally to sell insecticides for palm trees. When he came across Monica, an intermediate student, who was alone at her house, he attempted to rape her and attacked her with a hammer when she resisted, police said.
When Monica opposed Babu's attempt, in a fit of anger, he took a hammer and hit her on head, causing serious head injury, police said.
After hearing girl shouting, her neighbours gathered and caught the accused. Angered with the act of the youth, the villagers later allegedly set him ablaze by pushing him in a haystack.
Seriously injured Monica was taken to MGM government hospital at Warangal and was later shifted to Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) at Hyderabad.
