Mobile Phone Linked to Poor Sleep Health in College Students

The fear of not staying in contact with your mobile phone is called as nomophobia which is quite common among college students and this is associated with poor sleep health, as per the research. The results have shown that 89% of the sample of college students have nomophobia from mild to severe stages. It is related to daytime sleepiness and is associated with the poor sleep quality in a person. All the students who experience more nomophobia are said to experience sleepiness because of the inconsistent bed and wake times. The research is done by the Lead author Jennifer Peszka, Ph.D., professor of psychology at Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas.

Jennifer Peszka said that it is common among the study participants. There is a huge connection between nomophobia and a poor sleep. What if the severity of nomophobia continues to increase, she questioned. 327 university students participated in the study who are aged 20 years. They completed the questionnaires which included the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, the Nomophobia Questionnaire and the Sleep Hygiene Index. It is better to limit the phone before and during the bed time to have a comfortable, deep and long sleep. All those who are suffering with nomophobia are anxious to disrupt their sleep and check their phones instead of improving it. The research was published in an online supplement of the journal Sleep.
