Shashi Tharoor: Foreign Investment raises employment level

Leading Columnist and former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor on Sunday at Ahmedabad favored the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the retail sector, which was opposed by many associations and political parties across the country.

When investment comes from abroad, many people get work, new constructions take place, new shops are created, and consumers have to pay less. After carefully watching all this, our situation is slightly different; the shops have come up in China. You should ask that why FDI is not in India, but it is in different countries," he told media-persons here.

The decision of the ruling United Progressive Alliance, which has created much flutter in the oppositions has still been approved by the UPA of allowing 51 per cent FDI in the retail sector. If the government's decision gets Parliament's nod, major global players like Walmart will set shop in India.
