Sexual favors common: Indian cabbie at Oz

The two Indian origin cabbies accused of Sexual penetration without consent faced the trial at the Perth District Court. While Amrit Pal Singh (32) was found guilty, while his friend Prabhjit Singh Gill, (37) was acquitted. The case pertaining to the raping of a 25-yearold woman who was intoxicated after a hen's night out in February 5 last year.

The woman testified that she did not remember leaving the club or catching a taxi but did remember being in a cab and talking to the driver, Singh, while slumped against the passenger door. But Forensic testing of the woman uncovered sperm belonging to Singh. Later Singh denied raping the woman and told the court they had engaged in consensual sex. He added that they were to again meet in a couple of days.

But the acquitted Gill admitted that sexual favors were predominant in those parts. He added that at least 60 drivers to his knowledge had been offered such deals. But he ascertained that he never accepted such indecent proposals. Gills witness proved vital for his acquitting and for his friend’s conviction. The jury today delivered a unanimous verdict in favour of Mr Gill's testimony but against Singh's. Gill said during court hearing that he had gone to the car park to deliver drinks and had seen the pair having sex but had not had any contact with the woman. (With inputs from internet: AarKay)
