The Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Ajit Singh releasing a Commemorative Special Cover, designed by Department of Posts to mark the Silver Jubilee of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), in New Delhi on Tuesday. Civil Aviation Minister, Ajit Singh released a commemorative Special cover issued by Department of Posts, Government of India to mark the Silver Jubilee of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) in New Delhi on Tuesday. The Minister also had a review of the Aviation Security systems in the country on the occasion and expressed his satisfaction that the deterrent towards miscreants has proved quite effective. Singh appreciated that the BCAS has taken laudable steps to ensure security of passengers on board, aircraft and airport infrastructure.
Gurjot Singh Malhi, the Commissioner of Security of Civil Aviation said on the occasion that the Bureau has endeavoured to help equip stakeholders responsible for the aviation security in the country with the cutting edge technology, skill enhancement of security personnel, training in use of advanced technology and acquisition of security equipment to ensure the challenges arising out of exponential growth of civil aviation. He further mentioned that growth of civil aviation is likely to push India from 9th to 3rd position in the world in terms of volume of traffic necessitating a very strong security system. In keeping with this, the Bureau has identified challenges like identification of dangerous objects, difficulties in differentiating between harmful and harmless organic objects, detection of liquid aerosol gel to address them in right earnest while it endeavours to specify latest technology in the world to ensure civil aviation security.
Malhi added that India has emerged as a country fully compliant with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices owing to incessant efforts of the Bureau over the last 25 years of its existence. While celebrating the Silver Jubilee of the Bureau, he said that it has drawn lessons from incidents in India and abroad like Kanishka tragedy in 1985, IC-814 hijacking of 1999 to suicide bombing attack at Moscow airport in 2011 and use the same for creating a robust security system in the country.
