Pranab should not grant mercy to Afzal Guru : Bal Thackeray

The Shiv Sena Supremo Bal Thackeray said that Pranab Mukherjee's tenure would have a great start if he denies the mercy petition of Afzal Guru, who was responsible for the parliament attacks.

He made the statement while congratulating Pranab Mukherjee who has won the Presidential Elections to be the 13th President of India. Thackeray also said that he expected a great deal from Mr Mukherjee.

He said, "First of all, reject Afzal's mercy petition and hang him. The terrorist who attacked the sovereignty of the country should not stay alive," according to Samana, the mouth piece of Shiv Sena. He, in the magazine, also requested that Pranab has to take charge of this "sacred duty".

He recalled the contribution of Lal, Bal and Pal referring to Lala Lajpat Rai, Balagangadhar Tilak and Bipin Chandra Pal in the freedom struggle. He said that the magic of the trio still remains to this day.

Lal's Punjab has been in the position of the Prime Minister of the country but it lacks the required strengths, thanks to Sonia Gandhi's blessings, he said sarcastically. He added that Tilak's position cannot be occupied by anyone and now Pal's place was occupied by Pranab Mukherjee which is a matter of pride.
