The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee had made a controversial statement bashing the judicial system as she said that the courts were corrupt too.
She said that, while talking in the West Bengal assembly, in a few instances the verdicts of the courts can be turned in your favor with a handsome sum. She pointed out that there is a certain section in the Judiciary that was corrupt and that the verdicts these days could be bought. She also added that she was aware of a defamation suit being filed against her for making the statement but she insisted that the people knew the truth even if it meant her a term in the jail.
The statement comes only a day after the West Bengal Human Rights Commission WBHRC, had accused the state police of harassing jadavpur University professor, Ambikesh Mahapatra and his neighbor Subrata Sengupta who were both arrested for circulating e-mails with debatable cartoons drawn depicting Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Union Railways Minister Mukul Roy in April. However, they are now out on bail and they have also asked for the responsible officials to be punished after they receive compensation for the defamation.
