Power tariff to reach peaks from April 1

Taking a cue from the abnormal hike in power tariff in Tamil Nadu, the AP electric distribution companies too submitted proposals seeking 90 to 100 per cent increase in tariffs.

As per the tariff proposals for the financial year 2012-13 submitted to the State Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC) by the distribution companies on Monday, more than 1 Cr domestic consumers consuming electricity between 50 to 100 units per month will be affected by the increase. Nearly 50 percent of the commercial consumers too will have to face the brunt of power tariff hike.

Those who consume less than 50 units a month will not be affected because of the hike, according to proposals. If the APERC permits the distribution companies to have their way, the new tariff system will come into force from April 1, 2012.

The electricity department plans to get additional revenue to the tune of Rs.4900 Cr through the power tariff.

As per the existing rates, the domestic consumers who use less than 50 units per month are charged at the rate of Re.1.45 per unit and as per the new proposals this section of consumers will not be affected.

In the new slab system, domestic consumers who consume electricity between 50 to100 units per month, will have to pay tariff at the rate of Re.2.60 per unit for the entire consumption. This type of telescopic system will come into force for all types of consumers from April next. (JUBS)
