Union women and child development minister Maneka Gandhi said not a single girl child had been born in 70 villages in Haryana state over the past several years while addressing the launch of 'Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao' campaign in Panipat. According to the records villages in Mahendergarh district have low child pairing ratio. 762 girls are born for every 1000 boys and few villages have below 500, which is a concern.
The Minister further said, Haryana has a child pairing ratio of 775-837 and it was in the bottom of the charts as per 2011 census. Out of 100 girls, about 150-225 are getting killed in the womb and daily about 2000 girl are being killed daily in the country. The existence of women in few states is 900 while in other states it is 840. Maneka announced a reward of Rs one crore if the girl child ratio increases.
Concerning this issue, Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced a new welfare scheme called 'Kanya Kosh' for the schedule castes and poor families in the state. As per this new scheme, the state government will deposit Rs 21,000 in the account of each newborn girl from the above sections of society. The government should come up with better awareness campaigns to increase the girl child ratio among the low income group and addressing their issues can sort out this problem.
