Call money scam goes viral in AP, 80 arrested

Andhra Pradesh has witnessed a huge blackmail, extortion and sex racket, which is being operated in several districts in the state, involving several biggies among the politicians and also the money lenders.

Call money is nothing but a loan, which would be available at the doorstep, by just making a phone call. Unless the advantages are more, how can the money be available, so easily.

That logic is not an exception, even in call money issue. The interest rates of this call money are very high, estimated to be from 120 per cent to 200 per cent. Even promissory notes and blank cheques are also taken, against the loan given.

The logic is, the lender can demand the money back at any time and if at all, the borrower is not in a position to repay, the lender can take away several moveable and immovable property. This logic has resulted into several women, being coerced into sexual exploitation.

When did call money scam came out?

The call money issue has come out, after a woman in Vijayawada, complained to the police, saying that she was forced to give Rs. 6 lakh, for borrowing Rs. 1.5 lakh.

It was then, the police started investigations and came to know several horrible realities, that are being going on for years.

Kanakaraju, who runs a small eatery in Kaleswar Rao Market, Vijayawada says that, he is paying Rs. 500 every day, for borrowing Rs. 50,000, five years ago. Yet the lender did not return the documents and promissory note.

In another case, Nallmella Veera Venkata Sairam Reddy, belonging to Anaparthy in East Godavari district, was arrested and around 500 promissory notes are recovered from him. Reportedly, he has close links with YSRCP leaders.

Reacting to the issue, YSRCP Chief, Jagan said, “Though several MLAs, MPs, ministers and other TDP leaders names have come up in the scam, even then Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, is not taking any action against them.” Regarding this, he even submitted a memorandum to the governor.

On the other side, AP DGP, JV Ramudu said that, they have arrested around 80 people and all of them has a political background. He further added that, he would not be sparing anyone involved in the racket.

Responding to the viral issue, Chandrababu Naidu said that tough action would be taken on all the people, involved in the scam, and also asked the police to involve Nirbhaya Act, if at all, there is an instance of sexual exploitation.
