The Telangana police on Tuesday intensified their probe for a man who reportedly dragged the body of a pedestrian for two-and-a-half kilometres on his car, on the outskirts of Jadcherla.
The incident took place when an unidentified male was driving from Kurnool to Hyderabad and hit a pedestrian who was crossing the road.
The victim was identified as Srinu (35) of Nimmabaigadda in Jadcherla town. Srinu was a daily wage labourer in a local metal scrap shop in the town. After the mishap, the driver recklessly drove away for almost 2.5 km after being aware that Srinu had fallen on the bonnet of his car. However, the local youth tried to chase the driver on their motorcycles but in vain as he abandoned the car near Macharam and disappeared into the dark on foot.
The report adds that Srinu succumbed to his injuries before police reached the spot. While the owner of the car has been identified, his house in Hyderabad's Kukatpally area was found locked, according to the police.
A hit-and-run case was registered and the body was handed over to the victim’s family after the postmortem. An investigation is ongoing. This is not the first such incident in the state.
In January this year, a farmer from Nalagonda district who was crossing the road, was not only hit by a car, but his body was carried on the roof of the same car for as far as 20 km.
The police had then said that the 25-five-year-old behind the wheel, hit the farmer at such a high speed that the deceased was mounted on its roof due to the impact.
Fearing that he would be caught by people, he drove the car with the farmer on the roof for over 20 km.
