Sand mafia terrorising Karimnagar officials March 16, 2012 16:27

Despite having knowledge of unabated illegal sand mining, revenue officials in Karimnagar district are able to do only little to check it. They are fearing to stop or seize the sand-laden vehicles as the owners had reportedly formed a syndicate and are maintaining informers. If any police officer or government officials tries to seize vehicles involved in the illegal act, the sand mafia reportedly threatens them. About two months ago, two persons died under suspicious circumstances in Mallaram and Rudraram villages. There are allegations that the sand mafia is behind the murders. In the recent past -- on March 10, Goskula Sadaiah (35), a youth of Kadambapur village in Sultanabad mandal, unable to bear the harassment by sand mafia, tried to commit suicide in front of Sultanabad police station. But cops rushed him to the hospital and saved his life. Sand from the district is being transported to Hyderabad and Siddipet. According to the mines and geology department authorities, there is permission for mining sand only from two reaches -- Ramagundam and Velgatoor mandals. But miners are digging out sand from each and every source, specially, Khajipur stream in Karimnagar mandal and Manair stream in Sircilla town. Hundreds of tractors and trucks, laden with sand, ply from the places in broad daylight. Meanwhile, officials claim of seizing vehicles and slapping fine on tractor owners but the illegal activity has not comedown. There is criticism that the ruling and opposition parties, which are at loggerheads on political issues, are unitedly abetting illegal sand mining. JC H Arun Kumar told this paper that rules were being implemented strictly.

Naidu's convoy was pelted stones March 12, 2012 12:03

The Telugu Desam president, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, faced the ire of Telangana protagonists during byelection campaign in Kamareddy Assembly constituency on Sunday. The protesters pelted stones on the convoy of the TD chief near Faridpet village of Machareddy mandal. They also raised slogans against Mr Chandrababu. The police resorted to mild lathicharge to make way for the convoy. Mr Naidu made whirlwind election campaign in Bhiknoor, Domakonda, Machareddy mandals and Kamareddy town on Sunday. He urged the voters to support party candidate N. Venugopal Rao. Problem started when Mr Chandrababu asked women to respond on byelections. A woman said that she would not vote for the TD and support the Telangana sentiment. Another old man also reacted on similar lines. The TD president ex-pressed his displeasure over the replies. Speaking at various election meetings, the TD supremo said that regional political parties are emerging as power centres across the country. Landslide victory of Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh is a classic example for the new trend, he said and hoped that the trend would spread to other states. Coming down heavily on the TRS president, Mr K. Chandrasekhar Rao, the TD president said that the latter was amassing wealth in the name of Telangana state movement. He alleged that KCR had promoted his family members in politics and urged voters to give a fitting lesson to the TRS chief in the bypolls.

CM seeks time from Telangana employees March 06, 2012 16:09

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy Monday said the government was waiting for the high court's consent to implement an agreement reached with the Telangana employees at the end of a 42-day-long strike last year. The chief minister told the assembly that the government has sought the court's permission to implement the agreement and hoped that the matter would come up in a couple of days. However, dissatisfied with his reply, Telangana region legislators belonging to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stalled the proceedings, forcing speaker N. Manohar to adjourn the house for the day. The speaker had earlier adjourned the house for 15 minutes when the agitating members surrounded the podium, demanding that the government fulfill its promises, which include treating the strike period as leave. TDP leader from Telangana, E. Dayakar Rao alleged that the government had gone back on its word. Another leader, M. Narasimhulu said the chief minister was acting in an irresponsible manner on the issue. Leaders of the BJP, Communist Part of India (CPI) and other parties supported the employees' demand. The Telangana Employees' Joint Action Committee (JAC) last month launched its protest programme to demand that the government honour its commitment. The JAC plans to call for "Chalo Hyderabad" March 20. Its leaders have threatened to go on an indefinite strike. The government employees, along with transport workers and miners had gone on a strike last year to demand a separate Telangana state.

PVR Mall owners booked for cheating DLF March 01, 2012 15:54

The police on Wednesday registered a case against the owners of PVR Malls, acting on a complaint filed by real estate company DLF that it had been cheated out of `280 crore in a construction deal. In a complaint filed with the Central Crime Station (CCS), DLF alleged that PVR Mall owners cheated it by way of a partnership deal relating to construction activity. Police have registered a cheating case against Gauri Shankar Gupta and eight others and issued a look-out notice for them to foil any attempt to flee the country. They also set up six teams to nab the accused. According to the complainant, Gupta lured DLF with the promise of investment in a land development project and fraudulently appropriated nearly `280 crore. The deal was struck in 2005 when Gupta’s SBPL Infrastructure Ltd approached DLF to invest in a 5.24 acre piece of land that SBPL claimed to own at Lower Tank Bund. “SBPL, however, did not own the land but only had an agreement with M/s India Services Pvt Ltd for developing it. SBPL later entered into an agreement with DLF to jointly develop the property and took `11 crore as advance,’’ CCS assistant commissioner of police K V Ramnarsimha Reddy said. As security, SBPL pledged the original title deeds of an apartment at Banjara Hills. The project, however, did not take off and Gupta approached DLF again with some fresh offers. “Gupta told DLF that he was able to secure the development rights to the 5.61 acre Gandhi Medical College  in the name of three of his companies. The consortium was required to form a SPV in the name of GSG Constructions Pvt Ltd and DLF was asked to join the project by investing 50 per cent of the project cost,’’ the FIR filed by the police in court said. Asked to furnish `43 crore as security deposit, DLF paid the money in three instalments between October 2006 and January 2007 and an MoU was signed between the two companies. “GSG Constructions told DLF that it was entitled to enter into an  MoU (with another company) and discharge its obligations. However, DLF later found that the terms and conditions laid down in the allotment letter issued by the state government to GSG stipulated that the allotted venture partners or successful bidders could neither substitute any other person or company on the whole or part of the project land,’’ the FIR said. Even as DLF grew suspicious about the accused due to the retention or misappropriation of its advance amounts, the accused came up with yet another proposal. Gupta, through SBPL, proposed various real estate projects including development of a 63-acre piece of land at Katedan, 26 acres at Kukatpally and 78 acres at Jubilee Hills, it is learnt. “It  also said that SBPL is part of a consortium that bid for various lands of National Textile Corporation in Mumbai and was also likely to get two plots at Gold Mohar Hills and Apollo Mills. It sought an advance of Rs 51 crore from DLF to develop these lands and the latter paid the amount. Another  `50 cr was taken for a project in Mumbai,’’ police said. DLF representative Suresh Krishna, who filed a complaint with the police on Feb. 4, said the accused took nearly `280 cr from them. Meanwhile, when DLF tried to mortgage the Banjara Hills property pledged as security, it came to know that the accused had already sold some of the property. Another case also been registered against the accused in this regard on Jan. 28.
