A survey revealed that the long term unemployment may cause aging in men.
DNA sample of 5620 men and women who were born in 1966 were taken to study the effect of unemployment on their aging by the researchers of Imperial College London and the University of Oulu, Finland.
Telomeres at the end of chromosomes indicate the biological aging of a person. If the telomeres are short, it indicates the higher risk of age related diseases such as type diabetes and heart attacks.
The samples were taken from the persons at their age of 31 to examine the length of the telomeres. The result is that the persons who are unemployed for more than two years are found with less than half of the length of telomeres compared to the ones who were continuously in the employment.
The study failed to differentiate the effect of unemployment between men and women as out of the tests conducted, very few women were unemployed at the age of 30.
The author of the article adds:
A person fully occupied losing count of the days feels as if the time is going on very fast and on the contrary a person without constructive work gets boredom during the day and feels as if the time is going very slow. If one observes it can be seen that the health is maintained by the physical body if busily engaged in work proviede of course, other factors of aging are not affecting.
That way long time unemployment can cause personal damage too in addition to social problems.
