Sri Lanka’s opening batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan is the new captain of country’s cricket team, announced Sri Lanka Cricket Board this evening in Colombo.
The post of captain and vice captain fell vacant after Kumar Sangakkara and his deputy Mahela Jayawardene resigned earlier this month in the wake of Sri Lanka’s defeat by India in the World Cup final.
Dilshan, 34, has previously led Sri Lanka in several Twenty20 and one-day internationals. He has played 66 Test matches and 203 one-day internationals scoring 3,990 runs in tests and 5,456 runs in ODIs. He has also taken 62 wickets, bowling off-spin.
The Board said that selectors have postponed naming a vice-captain because prospective candidates are nursing injuries and may not be available for next month’s tour of England.
