Weight lifter Valluri Srinivasa rao, hailing from the Kondavelagada village in the Nellimarla Mandalam of 
Vijayanagaram district in AP, won the first gold medal for India in the ongoing Asian Games at Beijing in China on Saturday November 13.
Mr Srinivasa rao won the gold when he finished first in the 56 Kg category of weightlifting. He also won a silver medal in the recently concluded 19th commonwealth games at Delhi.
This is the first gold medal for India in the Asian games and the achievement of Srinivasa rao kicked off celebrations in his remote village.
