Teen social worker honoured as Olympic torch bearer

Teen aged social worker Pinky Karmakar will represent the nation at the London Olympics as the prestegeous torch bearer. Among the twenty personalities from across the globe the Pinky, who is studying X class is to do the honours at the relay in Nottinghamshire on June 28. This prestige was bestowed on the young girl for her extensive social work in a UNICEF programme at her village school. The teenager's achivements include to mentor 40 women with a sports programme.

The surprise is that the girl mentors her mom, a tea-leaf plucker in a tea garden, also in the group. Her other achievments include creating awareness about child marriage, adult literacy and alcoholism. Hailing from Borbaruah area in Dibruagrh district of Assam, she turns as pride to the nation.  Wishesh wishes the enterprising teen all the success in her endeavours.

Her father, a painter is filled with ecsacy as the girl departs to London. She is part of the International Inspiration Programme, sports legacy project of London 2012, run in partnership with UK Sport, Unicef and the British Council. The programme is an initiation of London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) chairman Sebastian Coe's promise at the Singapore bid in 2005 to 'reach young people all around the world and connect them to the inspirational power of the Games so they are inspired to choose sport'.
