Hyderabad Deccan Chargers has become history of the past while Sun Risers will become a reality this IPL. The team owners Deccan Chronicle Holdings Ltd, from the Nawabi city have sold out its stakes due to an ongoing controversy with the BCCI. And the buyers are Sun Network at an whopping 425 crores.
The most luxurious format of cricket, a brainchild of Lalit Modi, had always been in lime light for all wrong reasons. The cash-strapped tourney benefited the players much but did little good to the franchisers.
The Sun Network which had taken over the reigns in October this year was official about the name only a couple of days back. Sun had also participated in the auctions of the players held in November. Nearly 20 players who represented Deccan Chargers in IPL 2012 are set to get renewal of contracts.
PepsiCo won the bid for being the official partner to IPL for the next five years. The league would be called from the sixth season as the Pepsi IPL. The sixth season would now commence from April 03 to March 26, 2013.
As for the controversies, IPL had enough to run Bollywood for the next two years at least with a variety of issues. Initially Lalit Modi had been shown the door over some discrepancies which are still subjudice.
Then the Kochi team was shown the door over the Sunanda Tharoor controversy. Then now the DC team had been shown the door for non-payment of certain high volume dues.
However the entertaining format enjoys the patronage to the core in this nation of a billion cricket fans. (Wishesh AarKay)
