Story
Sai Dharam Tej’s technical debut movie “Rey” released in the theatres today. The remaining cast in the movie is Sayomi Kher, Shraddha Das, Venu Madhav, Raghubabu, and Ali etc. The movie is directed by YVS Choudhary under Bommarillu banner. Late Chakri scored the music.
Rock (Sai Dharam Tej) is an aimless flirt living with his family in Jamaica. He and his friends join a dance college with the only intention of getting close to girls there. They team up with Amrutha (Sayomi Kher) who encounters a tragedy and whose ambition is to win the ‘Best of the World’ title given in MTV dance competition in USA. She motivates them in mending their ways. Jenna (Shraddha Das) is the defending title winner who does wicked things to retain it. Do Rock and his friends help Amrutha in achieving her goal or does Jenna succeed is the crux of the movie.
Analysis
Rey is entirely shot in the Caribbean Islands and USA. If we miss the disclaimer at the beginning, we feel like we are in wrong theater because of all the foreigners in the movie. And they all talk Telugu! In fact half the time you feel as though you are watching some English dubbed movie. Coming from YVS Chowdary, Rey has some resemblance to his hit film Devadasu. Sai Dharam’s attitude, mannerisms and dialect Xerox-copy of Ram’s style in Devadasu. Ram giving voice- over introducing the characters only reconfirms that feeling.
The director seems to have tried a Step Up with mass masala. However choreography is not even up to the standard of any dance competitions aired on TV and the team aim of world championships! Then there are those unnecessary screams every now and then, as if the film is suddenly remembering its title! The film is quite loud and noisy throughout, so go with cotton stuffed in your ears. Music director Chakri must have left it unfinished and to fill the gaps in the background score and the makers seem to have the bright idea of adding yells. For example, when hero the appears BGM goes, ‘hero’ and similarly for other characters.
It becomes unbearably lengthy towards the end with unwanted fights forcibly inserted and on top of it the editing makes it still confusing. Rey ridicules CNN, MTV like anything with Telugu speaking comical anchors. Funniest part of it all is Marlon Brando of God Father is shown as father of Danga, mafia don played by Arpit Ranka.

Performance
Sai Dharam Tej’s performance is good. Sayomi makes no impression; she is the wrong choice for the role in view of her poor dance skills. Shraddha as ever performs well in yet another vamp role. YVS should have taken care to write a good script instead of banking on names of mega star, NTR, Pawanism, Prince etc.
