Cremation of Uttarakhand Victims

Because of the sudden calamity in the State of Uttarakhand, the State has been pressed to perform many things before it goes on the reconstruction work of the State.  First the stranded people are to be evacuated, then food, water and medical assistance are to be provided and then comes the work connected to the dead.  They are to be identified, their belongings are to be secured, postmortem has to be conducted and the bodies then are to be cremated.  But where bodies are in thousands some of the formalities may be skipped to perform mass cremation.

There are a number of dead bodies in Kedarnath that are to be taken out to perform cremation as per Hindu following.  As the rains made the extraction of the bodies difficult, the work could not be taken up.  The State Government procured 3 quintals of sandal wood, 21 quintals of wood and 1500 liters of cow’s ghee and one quintal of camphor and was transported to the place of cremation.  Some dead bodies reached Hardwar in the flood waters where postmortem is being undertaken and DNA samples and ornaments and other belongings are kept in safe custody under the supervision of an Officer of DIG cadre and a group of 15 doctors are working on it.
