NCP strengthens its lead in Legislative council

Nationalist Congress Party had increased its lead with most number of legislators in the Legislative Council on Wednesday.

Niranjan Davkhare of NCP seized the control of the Konkan constituency of graduates by defeating the existinng BJP legislator Sanjay Kellar with a wide margin of 5000 votes thereby increasing the number of legislators to 25 in the house with 78 members. Congress has a tally of 20 members in the house. Until June NCP had a lead of one seat to congress' 22 seats. Congress lost 2 seats in the council election and their tally fell to 20. BJPs count had fallen to a meagre 11.

NCP had secured the seat of Parbhani Hingoli during the June elections. NCP's 5 member lead could help then secure the council chairman position which is currently in the power of congress. However, partysources said that they had no plans to take the advantage for now.

With the win NCP's tally in the council rose to 25 in the 78- member house, which is five more than the tally of the Congress party. The BJP, which lost the Konkan seat, has 11 seats. Till June this year, NCP has only a one seat advantage over the Congress. It has 23 seats to Congress's 22. The Congress however could not retain its two seats in council election from local bodies in June, which reduced its tally to 20.
