Four congress candidates, who contested the Legislative Council elections under the constituency of MLAs, are declared elected by the returning officer this evening. PRP candidate C. Ramachandraiah and MIM candidate Altaf Rajvi also won the election.
Congress party candidates Paladugu Venkat Rao, Sudhakar Babu, M. Ranga reddy, Chengalrayudu were declared elected at the end of counting of the first preference votes.
MIM candidate Altaf Rajvi was declared elected after it was found he polled 36 votes as against the requirement of 27 votes for victory. The extra nine votes were said to have been polled from the congress MLAs who are supporting the former Kadapa MP YS Jaganmohan reddy.
It was also found that the fifth congress candidate Mohammad Jani was polled only 17 votes. The congress MLAs who are supposed to have cast their votes for Jani cast them in favour of Rajvi wasting their votes in the process and ensuring the defeat of the congress candidate. This indicates cross voting has taken place from the congress ranks.
PRP candidate C. Ramachandraiah, who contested with the support of the congress party, was polled 27 votes as expected. TRS candidate Mohammad Ali lost the election as he was polled only 11 votes.
The counting of second preferential votes was going on when reports last came in.
