Execution of death sentences for 8 convicts stayed

The eight cases of hangings mercy plea on which was recently rejected by the President of India were stayed by the Supreme Court in a special bench held on Saturday evening at the residence of Justice Sathasivam along with justice M Y Eqbal, in response to the petition filed by the People’s Union for Democratic Rights (PUDR).

Stay was given for the execution of death in those eight cases and notices were sent to the concerned States to that effect as the convicts are in different jails in different States, and the notices are stipulated to be returnable in four weeks time.

As per the contention of PUDR a delay occurred in the execution of those 8 convicts even after the confirmation from the apex court.

The convicts in question are Suresh, Ramji, Gurmeet Singh and Jafar Ali from Uttar Pradesh, Sonia and her husband Sanjeev from Haryana, Praveen from Karnataka and Sundar Singh from Uttaranchal.
