The Planning Commission of India said it is considering the Telangana government's plea of granting 'Special Status' to the state however, did not specify any time bound for it. During the bifurcation of United Andhra Pradesh, then Prime Minister announced in Parliament that residuary AP will be given 'Special Status' and post the bifurcation, Telangana government has requested the Planning Commission for the same.
The Union government in a report mentioned that 'Special Status' to Telangana and AP states are in consideration and added that it will take a decision at an appropriate time. However, there are also requests from other states like Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha. Though these three states, asked for 'Special Status' in 2013, their request was declined, again the respective governments re-appealed. As we all know the Planning Commission visited both the Telugu speaking states in September month and both the governments requested 'Special Status' individually. Post bifurcation, new AP is suffering with budget deficit of Rs 15,000 crores [Approx figures] and Telangana government quoted the Planning Commission figures which claimed 9 out of 10 districts in Telangana state are backward.
