JNU students Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya bearing sedition charges, finally surrendered before Delhi police, last night, hours after Delhi High Court orders.
Yesterday, the two students sought the security, approaching the high court, before they surrender, but the court denied their plea and ordered them to surrender in the court.
“You can't use your whim and fancy. You have to follow the procedure, surrender or arrest. You have to be produced before a magistrate and he will decide whether you go into police custody or jail,” the court said.
After absconding from the campus on February 12th, it is known that, the duo returned back to the JNU, last Sunday. Since then, there are several criticisms on them, be it in media or locals.
It is because of that, they had to seek security. However, after the court denied their plea, they drove from the administrative block to the main gate of the university, got into a Delhi Police vehicle and were taken to an undisclosed destination, the reports say.
JNUSU Vice-President Shehla Rasheed spoke about JNU students surrender news, saying, “We have full faith in law and judiciary of our country and would take its own course to get justice”.
She also mentioned that similar to JNUSU President Kanhaiya, Umar and Anirban too would be soon out of fake allegations of being anti-national.
Besides Kumar, Khalid and Bhattacharya, the other students are Rama Naga, Ashutosh Kumar and Anant Prakash.
To prevent the media from following Khalid and Bhattacharya, when they were leaving the campus this evening, the JNU students formed a human chain.
At a cultural event organized on terrorist Afzal Guru’s death anniversary, Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya and three other students had allegedly raised anti-national slogans in the JNU campus.
