JNU students union president Kanhaiya Kumar would reportedly campaign for the Left in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, with the target of beating BJP.
Speaking on the same, Sitaram Yechury, CPM general secretary said, “Mr Kanhaiya Kumar will campaign for the Left in the West Bengal polls. All students supporting the Left will participate in the campaign along with Kanhaiya. For the first time, the nation can see the power of the youth of the Left.”
Even CPI national secretary D. Raja said there is a demand for Students leader in different parts of India.
“As a student activist, a political activist, he is likely to campaign for us. There are demands for him to campaign in many places. We will have to see how it works out,” Raja said.
However, Kanhaiya reportedly said that, his duty as Students Union president, is only to protect the interests of the JNU students.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi government, now introspecting on how politically prudent was the move to crack down on the JNU students over the nationalism issue, chose to ignore the beginning of the rise of Kanhaiya Kumar in national politics.
Union minister M. Venkaiah Naidu tried to dismiss him by claiming that Kanhaiya was “enjoying free publicity”.
Suggesting Kanhaiya on one side to join his “favorite party”, which does “not even have single-digit” representation in the parliament, Venkaiah Naidu tried to double game with Kumar saying that, students are meant to concentrate on studies, rather than politics.
While the BJP are strictly against Kanhaiya, the oppositions like Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Sitaram Yechury are praising the Students leader for his speech in the university after the release.
Kejriwal tweeted, “What a brilliant speech by Kanhaiya.” Mr Yechury described his speech as “testimony to the fact that JNU students are demanding the creation of a better India and that they are the foot soldiers protecting the secular and democratic character of the Indian republic”.
