Happy Onam, August 29

Onam1Onam reminds me of the delicious Keralite delicacies served by next door Ponnu Chechi, Chechi we miss you from Chennai. Probably if you are reading this you will know how much Muruguesan flats miss you. Well that was a bit nostalgic moments of our childhood, and now let me get back to my theme. My chief asked me why boss so early when Onam is a week away about the festival. Though he was reluctant, I went on with the proposal after getting his half hearted green signal. As far as I know the 100 percent literature state has its populace spread across the globe and they need to come back to join the ten day  carnival and for them I send this message that your homeland is calling you back to rock man.

Onam2Onam is celebrated to remind the rich leagcy of the state under the golden era of King Maha Bali. The King had ruled the place, some 1000 years back, as per the myth. And his rule was filled with good governance and abundance. The King was a valiant warrior too and his positive trends reached the three worlds. And as usual this envied the Lords of Heaven who inturn prayed to Lord Vishnu over the issue. In order to oblige the Lord disguises as small Brahmin boy and approaches the King, who was conducting a big Yagna for the better of his subjects.

Onam3On seeing the Lord, the king asks him offers him his salutations. The Lord inturn asks for three feet of land. The King grants him his wish, thinking the Lord to be small boy. With one feet the Lord who takes the form of an invincible man crosses the sun and with the next stride the universe. To place his third foot he asks the King for place and the King who realizes the Lords disguise bends down and shows his head. The Lord inturn places his foot on the King's head. With the thrust the King reaches far below known as the Pathala Loka. Imagine this King was truly great to have his head thrust by none other than the Lord himself.

Onam4However spell bound by the King's magnanimity the Lord grants him a boon, 'for ever the King will be able to visit his subjects once in a year' and that is the core of Onam celebrations. Another important occasion is that the festival is around the harvest time. This is the time when the new crop comes to the market and with this brings in profits to the farmer. An ideal moment to celebrate. Wishesh wishes all of our readers a Happy Onam, advance wishes of course. (With inputs from internet-AW AarKay)
