Ganguly asked to return 63 acres of land

Ganguly asked to return 63 acres of landTo the disappointment of the former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, the Supreme Court today cancelled the allotment of 63.04 acres of land made to him by the then West Bengal government in 2000 and ordered him to return the land to the state government with in two weeks.

Delivering the order on a petition filed by the Kolkata-based NGO ‘Humanity’, the SC division bench, headed by Justice AK Ganguly, found fault with the Kolkata High Court’s verdict that upheld the allotment.

The NGO said the state government had allotted to Ganguly the land earmarked for a college violating all norms and procedures.  The NGO ‘Humanity’ approached the highest court of the land after its appeal was dismissed by the High Court.

The SC, upholding the argument of the NGO, said the land allotment was illegal and directed the state government to take possession of the land and return the money paid by Ganguly.
